St Lucia mourns passing of Soca Queen Nicole ‘Nicki’ David

Tributes have poured in across social media following the heartbreaking news of the passing of Nicole ‘Nicki’ David, widely celebrated as Saint Lucia’s Queen of Soca. She was 51 years old.

In late 2024, Nicki publicly revealed her battle with cancer, sharing her diagnosis and expressing heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming love and support she received from the public.

“I never knew that I was loved that much, but I thank you guys so much,” she said in an emotional video posted in November 2024, announcing that she would undergo chemotherapy treatment in Saint Lucia.

Supporters rallied behind her, launching a GoFundMe campaign to help cover her medical expenses. The fundraiser quickly surpassed its £10,000 goal, a reflection of the deep admiration and affection many held for her.

Carnival St Lucia described Nicki as a trailblazer, a powerhouse, and a beloved icon in the nation’s Carnival culture. In 2005, she made history as the first—and only—woman to win the Road March title with her explosive anthem “Bounce,” also affectionately known as “Queen of the Jungle.”

Nicki’s musical journey began with the band DN5 and flourished as she took on the role of lead vocalist with Spectacle. Her discography includes fan favorites like “Mate,” “Jammette,” “Road Block,” and “Wukking up is we Culture,” songs that continue to embody the high-energy spirit of Carnival.

Off the stage, Nicki was known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering community spirit. She lit up local karaoke events and was a beloved presence at community gatherings, always ready to bring joy with her voice and infectious personality.

In a symbolic full-circle moment, she returned to the Soca stage in 2024 for a powerful collaboration with Kisha Kay and Claudette Peters on the Carnival anthem “It’s Carnival,” marking her final national performance.

Her legacy is firmly embedded in the cultural fabric of Saint Lucia. Nicki’s passion, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements continue to inspire fans, fellow artists, and future generations.

Culture Minister Ernest Hilaire joined in paying tribute, stating, “The carnival and musical fraternity mourns the loss of a beloved and treasured gem, friend and soca queen, Nicole David. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit will never fade. Her voice lives in every fete, every road march, every soul that dances to the rhythm of the islands.”

Rest in power, Queen Nicki.
