Cruise Ship Arrival in Soufriere Sparks Mixed Reactions
Four cruise ships arrived in Soufriere today, raising hopes among local taxi operators for a boost in business. However, by midday, many drivers reported no significant increase in customers despite the influx of tourists. The arrival of multiple ships is usually seen as an economic opportunity, but some community members remained skeptical about its impact.
According to the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF), the visiting vessels included the Royal Clipper with 227 passengers, Evrima with 293, Emerald Sakara carrying 100 guests, and Sea Cloud with 64. While SRDF officials expressed optimism about the turnout, some vendors struggled to make sales. Young men selling flowers to tourists found it particularly challenging, as visitors appeared hesitant to make purchases.
Cyril Saltibus, the administrative manager of SRDF, welcomed the cruise ships’ presence, describing it as a positive sign for the local economy. “It’s a great feeling to see four cruise ships in our harbor, giving taxi drivers work and vendors an opportunity to sell,” he said. He also emphasized the importance of hospitality, noting that staff members had been encouraged to showcase Soufriere’s rich culture with warm smiles. Additionally, Saltibus urged young men in the community to engage in more constructive activities rather than persistently approaching tourists.
Despite mixed reactions from locals, some visitors expressed appreciation for their experience. A Mexican tourist, identifying himself as Marco, shared his excitement about visiting St. Lucia for the first time. “The feeling was great,” he said, adding that he looked forward to returning. Tourists were greeted with the rhythmic melodies of steelpan music, enhancing the island’s welcoming atmosphere. Soufriere recently hosted three other cruise ships last month, signaling a growing presence of maritime tourism in the area.
