Saint Lucia's Derelict Vehicle Removal Initiative Yields Significant Results

In a concerted effort to enhance public health and environmental standards, the Community Policing Unit of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, in partnership with the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA), has made notable progress in its Derelict Vehicle Removal Exercise. Launched on November 5, 2024, the initiative aims to address the proliferation of abandoned vehicles across the island.

As of January 31, 2025, authorities have identified and tagged 494 derelict vehicles for removal. Of these, 277 have been successfully cleared from various communities. The SLSWMA has directly removed 126 vehicles, while proactive owners have voluntarily disposed of an additional 151. This collaborative effort underscores the community’s commitment to maintaining cleaner and safer environments.

Inspector Brigette Algodel, spokesperson for the Community Policing Unit, expressed appreciation for the public’s involvement, stating, “The collective efforts of the authorities and the public have made a positive impact on improving the aesthetics of neighborhoods, promoting safer roads, and mitigating environmental hazards caused by abandoned vehicles.” The removal of these vehicles not only enhances the visual appeal of communities but also reduces potential health risks associated with derelict automobiles.

Residents are encouraged to continue participating in the initiative by removing any abandoned vehicles on their properties. For assistance or further information, individuals can contact the SLSWMA at 724-5525 or 453-2208. The ongoing collaboration between law enforcement, waste management authorities, and the public is pivotal in ensuring the success of this program, contributing to a cleaner and more beautiful Saint Lucia for all.
