The United Workers Party (UWP) has finalized its roster of candidates for the upcoming general election, officially unveiling Calixte “Kakal” Xavier as the new face for the Vieux Fort North constituency. Xavier will challenge the long-standing incumbent, Moses Jn Baptiste, who has held the seat for the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) since 2006.
The announcement was made at a UWP gathering over the weekend, where Xavier, a respected lawman and known entertainer, addressed supporters. “I am not here to sing for you, and I am not here to dance to the beats of drums; I am here in the capacity of a leader,” he stated, emphasizing a shift from his public persona to that of a serious political contender.
Xavier’s background as both a police officer and a musician has made him a familiar figure in Saint Lucia. He has frequently used his platform to critique the current government, often through his music. In his maiden political speech, he turned his focus to the pressing issue of crime, questioning the administration’s response. “Why are we not under a state of emergency when the streets themselves are screaming with urgency?” he asked the crowd, drawing a powerful response.
Casting himself as a force for change, Xavier pledged to inject “fresh energy” and a “new direction” into Vieux Fort North. “Leadership in that of Calixte “Kakal” Xavier, from neglect to progressive, the man to right the wrong in Vieux Fort North, I am your humble servant,” he declared, positioning himself as a dedicated public servant ready to address the community’s needs.
The selection of Xavier for Vieux Fort North is a key move for the UWP as they aim to expand their parliamentary presence. In the 2021 General Election, the UWP secured only two of the 17 seats, with the SLP winning a decisive 13. This new candidacy in a constituency held by the opposition for nearly two decades represents a strategic effort by the UWP to challenge the status quo and regain political ground.
